Etymology: Probably < the name of Colonel Joseph K. Rickey (1842–1903), U.S. politician, said to have invented the drink in a bar in Washington, D.C., in the late 19th cent.The attribution to this specific Joseph Rickey is found as early as 1890 ( Rocky Mountain News (Denver) 28 July 1890 2/1). 1889 Washington Post 30 June 16/3 Another drink that is a favorite with a class of drinkers is the Joe Rickey, which George Williamson and Taylor Hunt supply their customers at Shoemaker's. This drink was invented by Joseph Rickey himself, who used to have it concocted at Shoemaker's, and it has since been introduced to the patrons of the house generally.
