Etymology: < rickle v.1 + -ing suffix2. The use in quot. 1693 could simply show adoption of the word from the lexicographical record in Cotgrave (see quot. 1611 at rickle v.1), although compare rickle v.1 for later currency in Scotland.
Scottish and English regional (Lancashire). Obsolete. rare.
That rattles or clatters; that makes a rattling sound.
