Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French retable.
Etymology: < French retable (1426 in Middle French) < (with remodelling after table table n.) Old Occitan retaule (14th cent.), alteration (by haplology) of reiretaule , reirotaule (1218), either < post-classical Latin retrotabula (although this is first attested slightly later (1259); also retrotabulum (1294)) or < its elements classical Latin retro- retro- prefix (compare rear- comb. form) + tabula table n. Compare Catalan reretaule (1311 as rerataula), retaule (1295; > Spanish retablo, †retaulo (late 14th cent., earliest in Aragonese texts), Portuguese retabulo (14th cent. as rretauollo)); compare also post-classical Latin retabulum (1570 in a Spanish source, or earlier).
Christian Church.
A structure at the back of an altar consisting of a shelf for ornaments, or of a frame enclosing a reredos or similar decoration.
