单词 revet
释义

revetv.1

Brit. /rᵻˈvɛt/, U.S. /rəˈvɛt/, /riˈvɛt/
Forms: 1700s– reveted (past participle), 1800s rêvete (irregular), 1800s– revet, 1800s– revête (now rare), 1800s– revetted (past participle). See also revest v.2
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French revêtir.
Etymology: < French revêtir to furnish (a place or structure) with a protective cover, e.g. with boards (a1365 in Middle French as revestir ), to provide (a wall, rampart, etc.) with a revetment (1552), transferred uses of revestir revest v.1 Compare earlier revest v.2, and also earlier revêtement n., revetment n. N.E.D. (1908) recorded this material at two separate entries, revet and revête, the first with the pronunciation (rĭve·t) /rɪˈvɛt/ and the second with the pronunciation (rĭvēi·t) /rɪˈveɪt/. However, in the inflected forms reveted and reveting it is often impossible to tell from written evidence whether the corresponding stem form is revet or revete (with the accent omitted); it is also likely that the pronunciation /rɪˈvɛt/ would also be found for the form revête.
transitive. To face (an embankment, rampart, wall, etc.) with masonry or other material; to provide with a revetment.
ΘΚΠ
