Etymology: < post-classical Latin retusion-, retusio refutation (4th cent.), action of checking or restraining (1620 in a British source), shallow notch or indentation (1855 or earlier in botanical use) < classical Latin retūs- , past participial stem of retundere retund v. + -iō -ion suffix¹.Blount (see quot. 1656) appears to interpret the Latin noun in a sense which is not attested.
