Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French réveille-matin, réveil-matin.
Etymology: < French réveille-matin alarm clock (1514 in Middle French; also occasionally (from 1680) as réveil-matin, with substitution of réveil reveil n. for the first element) < réveille- , stem of réveiller (see reveille n.) + matin in the morning (c1100 in Old French), use as adverb of matin morning (see matins n.). Sense 1 is apparently not paralleled in French, although compare Middle French reveille-matin commotion in the morning (1497).With the β. forms compare French réveil-matin (see above), and also later reveil n.
