Etymology: In α. forms < French rétinnapthe (see below); in β. forms < retin- (in ancient Greek ῥητίνη resin: see retinite n.) + naphtha n., after French rétinnapthe (P. J. Pelletier & J. Walter 1837, in L'Institut: Sci. math., physiques et nat. 5 190/2). Compare retinol n.¹ N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (retinæ·fþă) /rɛtɪˈnæfθə/.

A hydrocarbon obtained by distilling pine resin, now regarded as identical with toluene.
