Etymology: < classical Latin retinentia retinence n., in post-classical Latin also condition of being retained in service (frequently from 12th cent. in British sources): see -ency suffix. Compare earlier retention n., and slightly later retinence n.
Obsolete.
The fact or capability of retaining something; retentiveness; an instance of this. Also: the fact of being retained in the service of another person.
