Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ῥητίνη , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ῥητίνη resin (see resin n.) + -ite suffix1. In sense 1 after French rétinite ( J. C. De La Métherie Théorie de la terre (1795) III. 461); in sense 2 after German Retinit (A. Breithaupt in C. A. S. Hoffmann Handb. der Mineral. (1818) IV. ii. 173).
