Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: retino- comb. form, -scopy comb. form.
Etymology: < retino- comb. form + -scopy comb. form. In sense 2 after French rétinoscopie (in rétinoscopie phosphénique , 1851 or earlier). In sense 3 probably after French rétinoscopique retinoscopic adj. (1880 in this sense; compare rétinoscopie , used later in 1880 in this sense). Compare retinoscope n., retinoscopic adj.
