Compare French rhubarbarate (1839 or earlier).The form rhabarberate is probably ultimately after German Rhabarber (see rhubarb n.); compare forms at rhabarbaric adj., rhabarbarin n. N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (răbā·ɹbărĕt) /rəˈbɑːbərət/.
Chemistry. Obsolete. rare.
A salt of chrysophanic acid. Cf. rhabarbaric acid n. at rhabarbaric adj.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin rhabarbarum rhabarbarum n. + -ate suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin rhabarbaratus (1682 or earlier; rare), also reubarbaratus combined with rhubarb (a1250 in a British source). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (răbā·ɹbărĕt) /rəˈbɑːbərət/.
