Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin rhabarbarum , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rhabarbarum rhabarbarum n. + -ic suffix, after either French acide rhabarbarique (1828 or earlier) or German Rhabarbarsäure (1819 or earlier).In form rhabarberic (and hence in form rhubarberic ) probably ultimately after German Rhabarber (see rhubarb n.); compare forms at rhabarbarin n., rhabarbarate n.2 In forms in rhubarb- after rhubarb n.
Chemistry. Now disused.
rhabarbaric acid n. an acid isolated from rhubarb, later identified with chrysophanic acid.
