Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymon: rhabdus n.
Etymology: Alteration of rhabdus n., probably after German Rhabd (1889; < English rhabdus n.).
Zoology.
A simple large sponge spicule in the form of a rod with two tapered ends (a diactine spicule). Also: (in more complex spicules) a main ray from which smaller rays diverge; = rhabdome n. Cf. rhabdus n. 2.
