Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ῥάβδος , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ῥάβδος rod (see rhabdo- comb. form) + -ite suffix1. In sense 1 after German Rhabdit (G. Rose 1864, in Abhandl. der Preuss. Akad. der Wissensch. 1863 48). In sense 2 after French rhabdite (H. de Lacaze-Duthiers 1852, in Ann. des sci. nat.: zool. 17 251). In sense 3 after German Rhabdit ( L. von Graff Monographie der Turbellarien: Rhabdocoelida (1882) I. 52).
