Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin rabdologia ; rhabdo- comb. form, -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rabdologia ( J. Napier Rabdologiæ, seu numerationis per virgulas libri duo (1617); 1623 as rhabdologia in the Latin title of the German translation of this work, Rhabdologia Neperiana) < ancient Greek ῥάβδος rod (see rhabdo- comb. form) + -λογία -logy comb. form. Compare French rhabdologie (17th cent.). In sense 2 probably independently < rhabdo- comb. form + -logy comb. form; compare earlier rhabdomancy n.
