Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a Swedish lexical item. Etymons: rhabdo- comb. form, -some comb. form.
Etymology: < rhabdo- comb. form + -some comb. form, in quot. 1891 after Swedish rhabdosom, and probably ultimately after an (untraced) equivalent term in German or French. Compare scientific Latin rhabdosoma (1839 as specific name of a diatom, 1847 as genus name of a crustacean).
Palaeontology.
A branched structure consisting of a number of graptolites joined together to form a colony.

1891 tr. S. L. Törnquist in Amer. Geologist 8 38 It is known that Barrande and Süss entertained entirely different conceptions of the structure of that genus [sc. Retiolites] and how sharply the former protested against the latter's interpretation of its rhabdosoma [Sw. rhabdosom].
1895 Ann. Rep. State Geologist N.Y. 1894 224 The latter [organ] is often so large as to overlap the other central parts and even the proximal ends of the rhabdosomes.
1935 W. H. Twenhofel & R. R. Shrock Invertebr. Paleontol. iv. 90 The Dendroidea include graptolites with fan-shaped rhabdosomes composed of branches or stems joined together into a trellis-like framework by means of transverse bars.
1990 C. Pellant Rocks, Minerals & Fossils 147/2 Glyptograptus is a biserial form with curved thecae which become straighter towards the end of the rhabdosome.
