单词 rhages
释义

Rhagesn.

Brit. /ˈrɑːdʒiːz/, U.S. /ˈrɑdʒiz/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Rhages.
Etymology: < Rhages (post-classical Latin Rages (Vulgate: Tobit), Hellenistic Greek Ραγη (Septuagint: Tobit)), former name of the Iranian city of Ray (Persian Ray, also (more fully) Šahr-e Ray; in Old Persian as Ragā, denoting a country, apparently consisting of the city and its surrounding area), now a part of greater Tehran. Compare also post-classical Latin Ragau (Vulgate: Judith), Hellenistic Greek Ραγαυ (Septuagint: Judith), name of the surrounding area, and Hellenistic Greek Ῥάγαι (Strabo), Ραγοι (Septuagint: Tobit), apparently in the same sense. The place name is attested in English contexts from the late 15th cent. onwards, frequently but not exclusively with reference to the biblical book of Tobit. Forms with initial rh- appear in the 17th cent. and become more common in the 18th. These are probably alterations of the Latin name after words of Greek origin with initial Rh-. Compare:1481 W. Caxton tr. Siege & Conqueste Jerusalem (1893) lxxviii. 124 He wold come vnto theyr cyte, whiche was named rages, as is founden in the byble.1611 Bible (King James) Tobit 1.14 I..left in trust with Gabael..at Rages a citie of Media [L. in Rages civitatem Medorum, Gk. ἐν Ραγοις τῆς Μηδίας], ten talents of siluer.1783 B.
