Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymon: Welsh rhandir.
Etymology: < Welsh rhandir territory, area, piece of land (13th cent.), unit of land measurement (13th cent.), share (of inherited land), patrimony (14th cent.) < rhan part, portion (see rann n.) + tir land, territory (Old Welsh tir ) < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin terra terra n.
Chiefly historical.
An allotted portion or share of (esp. inherited) land. Hence: a measure of land, of a size varying from 16 to 312 acres under different legal codes.
