Compare French rhapsode , rapsode (1552 in Middle French in sense 1; 1670 in sense ‘author of a collection of things without value’). Compare earlier rhapsodist n. and rhapsody n.The existence of a verb corresponding to ancient Greek ῥάπτειν already in Mycenaean Greek may be inferred from the derived noun form ra-pte-re (plural), corresponding to an unattested ancient Greek form *ῥαπτῆρες tailors; compare Hellenistic Greek ῥάπτης person who mends clothes.
