In later use: spec. a disorder of probable immunological origin occurring in children and young adults following group A streptococcal infection (usually of the throat), typically characterized by fever, migratory arthritis, and inflammation of the heart (often leading to damage to the mitral and aortic valves), frequently with rash, the formation of subcutaneous nodules, and chorea.
