Etymology: < French rheumatisme flow or flux of humours, pain or stiffness in joints, muscles, etc. (a1500 in Middle French as rheumatisme ; in 17th cent. also rumatisme , rhumatisme ) and its etymon classical Latin rheumatismus morbid discharge from the body (Pliny) < ancient Greek ῥευματισμός humour or discharge from the body, flux, rheum < ῥευματίζειν rheumatize v. + -ισμός -ism suffix.
