单词 rhine berry
释义

Rhine berryn.

Brit. /ˈrʌɪn b(ə)ri/, U.S. /ˈraɪn ˌbɛri/
Forms: 1500s Rheyn berry, 1600s Rheine berry, 1500s– Rhein berry, 1800s– Rhine berry.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: proper name Rhine , berry n.1
Etymology: < the name of the river Rhine (see Rhine n.1) + berry n.1, after early modern Dutch rijnbesie; the first element in the Dutch word probably in fact shows a folk-etymological substitution of the river name for Middle Dutch, early modern Dutch rein ridge forming the boundary of a field, boundary marker (see rain n.2); compare similarly German Rheinbeere beside Rainbeere.
Now rare.
The fruit of the common buckthorn, Rhamnus cathartica; (also) the plant itself (more fully †rhine berry bush) .
