A modified form of the Danish language used in Norway after its separation from Denmark, and which (as Bokmål) now constitutes one of the two standard forms of the Norwegian language (the other being Nynorsk, formerly known as Landsmål).Also known as Dano-Norwegian and Riksmål n., but now more properly called Bokmål n.

XXXI. 275/1 The close of 1899 and the beginning of 1900 were occupied by a discussion, which drowned all other interests, and in which every Norwegian author took part, as to the adoption of the landsmaal, or composite dialect of the peasants, as the national language in place of the rigsmaal or Dano-Norwegian.
