Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Rille.
Etymology: < German Rille ( J. H. Schröter Selenographische Fragmente I. (1791) 198), specific use of Rille fissure, furrow, channel (see rill n.2). Compare slightly later rill n.2 3.
Astronomy.
A long narrow fissure or channel on the surface of the moon; spec. (more fully sinuous rille) a winding one thought to have been created by molten lava. Hence: a similar channel on any planet or satellite. Cf. rill n.2 3.
