释义

rim ram ruffphr.n.

Brit. /ˌrɪm ram ˈrʌf/, U.S. /ˌrɪm ræm ˈrəf/
Forms: late Middle English rom ram ruf, late Middle English–1500s 1900s– rum ram ruf, 1500s rim ram ruffe, 1500s rym ram ruff, 1800s– rim ram ruff, 1900s– rim ram ruf.
Origin: Probably an imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Probably imitative of the effect of alliterative verse (compare raff n.1, and see quot. c1410 at that entry). Perhaps compare French regional (Walloon) rim ni ram rhyme nor reason, rim-ram protocol, formalities.Although later use explicitly echoes Chaucer (see quot. c1405 at sense A.), none of the medieval manuscripts of Chaucer in fact have rym or rim as the first element. 16th-cent. printings of Chaucer's works read ‘rum, ram, ruf’ (1532–98).
