Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rimaye.
Etymology: < French rimaye (1844 or earlier; originally French regional (Savoie); compare French regional (Swiss) rimee (1844)) < classical Latin rīma fissure (see rima n.) + French -aye, suffix forming collective nouns. Compare Old French (Picardy) rimee fissure, crack (in the wood of a ship) (13th cent. in an isolated attestation). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (rimāy) /rimɑj/.
Chiefly Mountaineering.
A crevasse or series of crevasses found near the head of a mountain glacier; = bergschrund n.
