Etymology: < rim n.¹ + base n.¹, apparently showing folk-etymological alteration of French embase (1805 in the passage translated in quot. 1817), specific use of embase supporting or reinforcing part (1676) < embase- (in embasement continuous pedestal under a building (1676) < en- en- prefix¹ + base base n.³ + -ment -ment suffix, after Italian imbasamento (15th cent.)).Compare slightly earlier base rim, apparently also showing folk-etymological alteration of French embase:1800 J.
