Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Greek ῥιπιδ- , ῥιπίς , -o- connective, Greek γλῶσσα , -ate suffix².

Etymology: < ancient Greek ῥιπιδ-, ῥιπίς fan ( < ῥιπ- , ῥίψ wickerwork (see rhipsalis n.) + -ίς -id suffix²) + -o- connective + ancient Greek γλῶσσα tongue (see gloss n.¹) + -ate suffix², after scientific Latin Rhipidoglossa, former order name ( F. Zoology.

Designating a flexible and protrusible radula with a band of numerous fine marginal teeth on either side of a central strip of larger teeth, occurring in certain gastropod molluscs. Also: designating molluscs of the former order Rhipidoglossata (now rare).
