Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rhizoides.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rhizoides (1728 or earlier; from 1820s in scientific Latin as specific epithet) < ancient Greek ῥίζα root (see rhizo- comb. form) + classical Latin -oīdēs -oid suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek ῥιζώδης like a root. In use as noun (sense B.) after German Rhizoid (1868 or earlier).
