Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Saxon rīdeman (Middle Low German rīdeman ), Old High German reitman (Middle High German reitman , German †Reitmann ), Old Icelandic ritmaðr < the Germanic base of ride v. + the Germanic base of man n.1 Compare radman n. and Old English rǣdemann horseman (see radman n.), and also rider n.Early currency of the specific sense is implied by post-classical Latin ridemannus mounted bailiff (second half of the 13th cent. in British sources; < Middle English). Apparently also attested early as a surname: Thomas Rideman (1256), William le Rideman (1259), Roger le Rydeman (1290), William Rydeman (1295), Thomas Rideman (1327–8), etc.
