Etymology: Probably < ride v. + way n.1 Compare Middle Dutch rīdewech (Dutch rijweg ), Middle Low German (rare) rīdewech , Middle High German rītwec (German Reitweg ), Old Swedish (in late sources) ridvägher (Swedish ridväg ), early modern Danish, Danish ridevej . Compare also Old Swedish Reþvägh riding path (only as place name; Swedish †redväg ), which shows as its first element Old Swedish redh (see road n.).Apparently re-formed in the 19th cent.
A bridle path; (also) a roadway.
