单词 rhodora
释义

rhodoran.

Brit. /rə(ʊ)ˈdɔːrə/, U.S. /rəˈdɔrə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rhodora.
Etymology: < the supposed classical Latin form rhodora, corrupt form of the name of a Gallic plant (not identified) described in Pliny Nat. Hist. 24. 172 (see quot. 1601); however, in the text of Pliny, rhodoram (the accusative form in which this word appears) is now regarded as a false reading for rōdarum . In sense 2 after scientific Latin Rhodora, which shows adoption of this name as a genus name by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (ed. 2, 1763) 561; Linnaeus's adoption probably arose from a mistaken association with ancient Greek ῥόδον rose (see rhodo- comb. form).
1. A plant with nettle-shaped leaves (not identified and perhaps apocryphal). Obsolete. rare.
