Etymology: < ridge n.1 + way n.1 Compare post-classical Latin rugweia (1315).In a number of Middle English forms it is difficult to establish whether the first element contains an affricate or a plosive, and it is possible that some of these examples (especially in sources from the Danelaw counties) may rather show a parallel formation in rig n.1 Compare forms at ridge n.1 and see further discussion at that entry.
