Etymology: < rhubarb n. + -ative suffix, after Middle French reubarbatif (16th cent.), alteration of rébarbatif rebarbative adj. after reubarbe rhubarb n., either punningly (with allusion to the tart taste and purgative qualities of rhubarb; compare quot. 1600) or through folk-etymological association (probably with similar motivation).
Bad-tempered, fractious, disagreeable.
