Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. rhynchokinesis n.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rhyncho-.
Etymology: < scientific Latin rhyncho-, combining form (in e.g. Rhynchophorus (see rhynchophorous adj.), Rhynchosaurus Rhynchosaurus n.) < ancient Greek ῥύγχος beak, snout (see -rhynchous comb. form); compare -o- connective. Compare Byzantine Greek ῥυγχο- (only in ῥυγχελέϕας having an elephant's trunk).Adaptations and borrowings of scientific Latin formations with this element are found from the first half of the 19th cent. New formations within English are rare (compare rhyncholite n.). Compare German rhyncho-, formations in which are found from the late 19th cent. or earlier. Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin.
