Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Riesling.
Etymology: < German Riesling (mid 16th cent. as Rißling; 1490 as Rußling), of unknown origin. Compare French riesling (c1750; < German). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (rī·sliŋ, -zliŋ; also rəi·zliŋ) /ˈriːslɪŋ/, /-zlɪŋ/; also /ˈraɪzlɪŋ/.
The name of a variety of vine and grape widely grown in Germany, Austria, Alsace, and elsewhere; the dry white wine produced from this grape. Recorded earliest in attributive use.

1833 C. Redding Hist. Mod. Wines v. 168 The white wines are ranked in quality as follows: Riesling, muscadine, Kléber, or Klebner, and common. Riesling wine is distinguished by a particular bouquet, by strength, and durability.
1888 Encycl. Brit. XXIV. 611/1 Amongst the leading descriptions of vine plants in German vineyards the Riesling stands out pre-eminent.
