Etymology: < room adj. + -th suffix1, with i-mutation of the stem vowel. Compare Middle Dutch ruumte , ruymte , ruumt (Dutch ruimte ), Middle Low German rǖmte . Compare also ( < Middle Dutch or Middle Low German) German Räumte the open sea (18th cent.). Compare a-rimth adv. and later roomth n.Compare also Older Scots rind, apparently in sense ‘breadth’ (one isolated attestation), perhaps a reflex of the same word:1587 in J. M. Thomson Registrum Magni Sigilli Scotorum (1888) V. 390/1 Ane uther merche stane set in rind and lenth fra the bankis.
