Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rinceau.
Etymology: < French rinceau (1360 in Middle French as rainseau in this sense; c1200 in Old French as rainsel in sense ‘small branch’) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *ramuscellus small branch (compare Italian ramoscello (a1306 as ramoscel )), alteration (see -ellus -ellus suffix) of post-classical Latin ramusculus small branch (see ramusculus n.).
Art and Architecture.
An ornamental motif consisting of a band of scrolling or spiralling foliage (esp. vine or acanthus leaves), frequently carved, moulded, or painted; (also) a decorative border featuring this.
