Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian rinfresco.
Etymology: < Italian rinfresco refreshment (17th cent.), refreshing drink (19th cent., although earlier currency is implied by quot. 1745), light course or meal consisting of appetizers and refreshments (17th cent.; 16th cent. denoting snacks served in this way) < rinfrescare (see refresh v.).
A refreshing drink (now rare); a light meal or snack; a reception at which refreshments are served.
