Origin: A borrowing from Maghribi Arabic. Etymon: Maghribi Arabic riyāḍ.
Etymology: < Maghribi Arabic riyāḍ courtyard, garden, (hence contextually) a type of large house surrounding a courtyard, originally the plural of classical Arabic rawḍa garden (apprehended in Maghribi Arabic as a singular noun, from which a new plural riyāḍāt was formed). Compare French riad (1904 or earlier; < Maghribi Arabic).
Chiefly in Morocco: a courtyard, garden; (hence) a type of traditional large house surrounding a courtyard, now often serving as a hotel.
