单词 bested
释义

bestedbesteadadj.

/bɪˈstɛd/
Forms: Middle English bistaðed, bistaðet, Middle English bistad, Middle English bisted, Middle English bestedd(e, Middle English–1500s bestadd(e, Middle English–1600s bestad, Middle English bistadde, bystedde, bystade, 1500s bestade, 1500s– bestead, 1700s– bested.
Etymology: Middle English bistad , < bi-, be- prefix 2 + stad, later sted, ‘placed.’ < Old Norse staddr past participle of steðja to stop, place: see stead v. (Middle English had also bistaðed , ultimately < Old Norse staðr ‘place,’ which might itself have become stad : compare history of clad .) The later spelling bestead is merely due to analogy, compare bestead v.1 and stead n. Hence Spenser's bestad v.
