Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ribbon n., grass n.1
Etymology: < ribbon n. + grass n.1, so called on account of the variegation of the leaves. Compare riband grass n. at riband n. Compounds 3.
The grass Phalaris arundinacea, spec. the ornamental cultivar ‘Picta’, which has leaves striped with white. In later use also: any of various grass-like aquatic plants, esp. of the genus Vallisneria (family Hydrocharitaceae).
