Any of various marine fishes with a long, slender, flattened body and (typically) a dorsal fin running the length of the body; esp. (a) fishes of the order Lampriformes, which includes the dealfishes ( Trachipteridae), oarfishes ( Regalecidae), and crestfishes ( Lophotidae); (b) (chiefly U.S.) cutlassfishes and scabbardfishes of the family Trichiuridae.
