Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rigoler.
Etymology: < Middle French rigoler to amuse oneself, have fun, to amuse (someone) (13th cent. in Old French), to mock (someone) (1306), of uncertain origin, perhaps a blend of riolle debauchery, debauch, merrymaking (c1200: < rire to laugh (see riant adj.) + -ole , suffix) and either gale merrymaking or the related verb galer (see gallant adj., and compare slightly later rigale : see regale n.2).
Obsolete. rare.
