Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from French. Or perhaps (ii) a variant of alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French rebeble ; ribibe n.

Etymology: Apparently < Middle French rebeble (probably 14th cent. in an isolated attestation), apparently a blend of rebibe ribibe n. and Old French, Middle French rebelle (14th cent.), a variant of rebibe with dissimilation (compare similarly rebec rebec n.); alternatively, the English word may perhaps (although attested earlier) show an alteration of ribibe n. by association with the musical terms treble adj. (compare trible at treble adj. and adv. Forms), quatreble adj. (compare quatryble at quatreble adj. and n. α. forms), and quinible n., although these are all first attested later, and the semantic match is not exact.
