Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rigodon.
Etymology: < French rigodon (1672; now also rigaudon rigaudon n.), of uncertain origin. Compare later rigaudon n. J.-J. Rousseau Dict. de musique (1768) at Rigaudon reports a theory that the name of this dance came from that of its inventor, a dance master called Rigaud, although this cannot be verified.
