单词 rich man
释义

rich mann.

Brit. /ˈrɪtʃ man/, U.S. /ˈrɪtʃ ˌmæn/
Inflections: Plural rich men.
Forms: see rich adj., n., and adv. and man n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: rich adj., man n.1
Etymology: < rich adj. + man n.1In Old English and early Middle English the first element is usually treated as a normal adjective inflected for case and number. Occasional instances in Old English in which the first element is uninflected (compare quot. OE1) may show a true compound; apparently similar examples from the transitional English of the 12th cent. (compare quot. ?a1160) probably show only the expected reduction of inflectional endings. In late Middle English and early modern English frequently written without a space between the two elements (compare poor man n., goodman n.), but now usually written as two separate words. Attested early as a surname and personal name: William le Richeman (a1200), Ricardus Richeman (1202), Richeman Molendarius (1205), Richemann Calle (1241), Alexander filius Richemanni (1258), etc., although some instances probably reflect an unattested Old English personal name *Rīcmann , cognate with Old High German Rīhman , formed on the common Germanic personal name element (see rich adj., n., and adv.). In quot. 1643 after post-classical Latin ricoshomines (plural), which itself shows a partial remodelling of Spanish †ricos omes, †ricos ombres noblemen.
poetic and literary in later use.
A man who is rich; a wealthy man. In early use also: †a man who is powerful; a powerful man (obsolete).
