Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English hringe.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of Old English hringe, although this is not attested in the relevant sense (see ring n.1); however, compare ring n.1 19 and also the Norwegian cognates of Old English hringe cited at that entry. Perhaps compare runge n.Quot. 1720 could perhaps instead show renge n.2
Chiefly English regional (northern and south-eastern). Now rare.
A large tub, esp. one used to carry water.
