Origin: A borrowing from Malay. Etymon: Malay ringgit.
Etymology: < Malay ringgit jagged or toothed (formerly with allusion to the serrated edge of a milled coin as opposed to the unserrated edge of the rial, an unmilled coin).The word appears in Marsden's Malay Dict. (1812) as ringgit, glossed as ‘Spanish Dollars’. It is uncertain whether the following ultimately reflects the same word (glossed in the source as a Dayak word denoting a unit of measure for weighing gold):1887 M. Blok tr. in M. T. H. Perelaer Ran away from Dutch xiii. 245 One thaël weighs two ringgits; one ringgit, two sadjam- pols; one sadjampol, two and a half sakobangs.
The principal monetary unit of Malaysia, officially introduced in 1975, and consisting of 100 sen. Also: a coin or note of this value.The Malaysian Currency (Ringgit) Act of 1975 changed the names of the currency from dollar and cent to ringgit and sen, although the word had been used in English before then.
