Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rocaille.
Etymology: < French rocaille small pieces of stones, shells, etc., collectively, used to form grottoes and other ornaments (c1636 as †rocalle ), specific sense of rocaille (see ratchel n.). Sense B. 2 apparently represents a transferred use which is unparalleled in French.The French word was also borrowed into other European languages; compare German Rocaille, feminine (1755 or earlier), (rare) Rocail, masculine (1960 or earlier), Dutch rocaille, feminine (1778 or earlier), (rare) rocail, masculine (1960 or earlier).

Designating a style of ornamental work or interior design characterized by the use of elaborate shellwork, scrolling, and similar devices and associated esp. with the mid to late 18th cent.; (of an object, room, etc.) decorated or ornamented in this style. Cf. rococo adj. 1a.In quot. 1776: designating the use of rocks and shells to create ornamental design in a grotto; cf. B. 1.
